Black Play Therapy

Paly Therapy Program

Social Justice Program

Black mental health professionals often share cultural, historical, and sometimes linguistic commonalities with Black clients. This shared background can enhance the therapeutic relationship, making it easier to build trust and understanding. It can also provide clients with role models who reflect their own identities, which is particularly empowering for children and adolescents.

Having more Black play therapists enriches the field by bringing diverse perspectives into training programs and professional development opportunities. This diversity can help all therapists, regardless of background, to become more culturally aware and responsive, improving the quality of care across the board.

At the Black Play Therapy Foundation, we understand the crucial role that mental health professionals, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, play in fostering community well-being. In line with our commitment to social justice and equity, we are excited to introduce our ‘Social Justice’ training program. This program, tailored specifically for licensed Black mental health professionals aspiring to become registered play therapists, offers unique benefits to enhance your professional journey.

Objective of the Program

Our Social Justice program is not just about alleviating financial burdens, it’s about providing comprehensive support and resources to improve access to culturally responsive mental health services to individuals and families within the Black community. We want to enable more Black mental health professionals to receive quality play therapy training, supervision, and consuktation to enhance the therapeutic outcomes for Black individuals and families.

This program is crafted to support the training of Black mental health professionals in providing a more culturally attuned, empathetic, and effective approach to mental health care, which not only benefits individual clients but also contributes to the broader goal of health equity within the Black community. The Social Justice program aims to help Black mental health professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge to meet the credentialing requirements to submit their Registered Play Therapist™ (RPT™) or School-Based Registered Play Therapist™ (SB-RPT™) applications. By focusing on the Black mental health professional population, we hope to address the systemic barriers that often hinder access to specialized training and career advancement in the mental health field.

Mental health stigma is a significant barrier in many communities, especially in Black communities where there may be historical mistrust of medical and psychological interventions. Black therapists can play a significant role in destigmatizing mental health care by providing culturally sensitive services and by being visible advocates for mental health within their communities.

This initiative is more than just a training program; it’s a step towards creating a more equitable and just society by empowering Black mental health professionals through education and professional development. We are excited to support you in your journey to becoming a Registered Play Therapist™ and look forward to your contributions to the field and the communities you serve.
